Spiders are great - any colour thread and then see what works on the day.
I used to fish a run on the Wharfe at Collingham that was a mixed fishery and claret and starling spiders brought a fish almost every cast, or so it seemed.

Best thing is to find some patterns tie and get materials for the patterns, rather than get materials and try to figure out what to tie. Once you get the hang of what looks good with what, you'll have a better idea about putting stuff together.

As for suggestions of what materials.
How about some Red turkey, flat silver tinsel, fine oval tinsel/wire, peacock sword, black hen or schlappen (you have black Thread) = Alexandra.

Or try one of these

I'm assuming that you are fishing stillwaters for rainbows and are fairly new to fly tying.

Get some white and some black "marabou" feathers and tie up a few Cats Whiskers with your chenille on both the size 8 and the size 12 hook. They are a very reliable lure - unless the fish have seen too many of them.!

Here's a link to tying them. You can use black for the wing and tail as well as white. White and green and Black and green are good colours.

Tying Instructions for the Cat's Whisker Mini Lure

If you want to add some weight you can tie in an underbody of lead wire although I prefer to use bath chain eyes.
