Default Fly tying kit

I want to start tying my own flies but don't know what I should start off with.

Do I go and buy one of these complete kits that claim to have everything I will need, or do I buy the kit bit by bit until I have what I need ?

I'm just a bit confused as to what to do. I'll happily spend whatever is needed to do the job properly, but not on stuff I don't really need.

Anybody have any advise ?

Pick the flies you want to tie, and buy the materials you will need for them.

The kits are not that great imo.

I got one and then never used half of the stuff that came with it.

What denzil3009 says is spot on.

Good advice would be to investigate if there are Fly Tyers Guild meetings in your area ... you'll get to see what other tyers use and what you need.

I agree with Denzil ,let the patterns you wish to tie dictate your purchases with kits you will end up with poor quality gear your going to end up replacing , a nice hen cape in black or perhaps greenwells a hares mask perhaps and maybe some peacock herl and for tools a bobbin holder , hackle pliers and vice are must haves ( obviously some thread not the midge type at first) .Oh and some ribbing material gold wire and tinsel maybe . At a guess forty quid should get you of the ground tying spiders ,DB's and GRHE.
Good luck with it and if it doesnt work out you can flog the lot for twenty five quid. PJ
