Default Question about Whiting Hebert bronze grade variant capes

I can't find any posts on this...

Like others I'm feeling the squeeze at the moment. I want to tie up a few, but not masses of, kites imperial and the odd bwo pattern needing a dun hackle.

I've seen a Whiting bronze grade variant cape which has both light ginger and dun. Are these any good, or is it so 'variant' that I'll soon struggle to find enough 14/16/18 range light ginger ones?

thanks

Whiting "Hebert's" have superb colour, however generally they are slightely larger & a fraction softer than Whiting's own label stock, that's not to say they won't do what you want, but you may be better looking at Whiting's 100's in the sizes & colours you want. You should get 2/300 flies per pack dependant on how many turns you make. !/4 & 1/2 saddles would be the next step, if you are tying 100's of a pattern every year or so.

The colors of the Hebert range are superb and I enjoy tying with them. However any variant or cree will be unpredictably colored and cannot be judged from a photograph, only by hand. The Whiting 100s can be more sparsely tied, and do go a long way, but are pricy as well. Why not try your local fly tyers and see if someone can spare a few hackles of the right size?

Nothing wrong with Whiting Bronze variants. The only variant is the colour - it's a mix. The feather quality is excellent. If you've found a variant that suits your colour needs and budget then go ahead.
