Default Vice advice

My father has taken up fly tying this last few months and I think it's time he had a new vice. One he has is very basic.Looking to get him one for Christmas and was wondering if anyone could recommend.Looking to pay up to £150 maybe.Cheaper the better of course if the vice is good.

Have looked at the Snowbee Fly Mate Pedestal Vice (Standard-as ball joint has had some bad reviews) Snowbee Fly Mate Pedestal Vice | Buy Online at AtkinsAngling.com

and the Essential Fly Fish Bamboo Rotary Fly Tying Vice Essential Fly Fish Bamboo Rotary Fly Tying Vice is it worth the extra money?

Any info greatly appreciated.Or any other recommendations.

All the best,FnC.

Anvil vices. Apex £99 or Atlas £149.
I would recommend the Apex, great value for money.

Iv got the Anvil Atlas and Im happy enough with it, I could pick small faults with it but as with every vice out there its user choice.

Second vote for the HMH Spartan. I really love this vice, far more than any of the may others I tried - which rather makes the point that the buyer really needs to try the vice as preferences vary hugely from one tier to another.

For me, the Spartan is fantastically engineered and has a beautifully simple design. I just do not like "true rotaries", but other tiers much better than me would use nothing else. It does rotate though so I can check both sides as I tie. It is just the right size as I like to park my left hand on top of it while I am tying. No bits to fall off and it is easily adjusted to suit different hook sizes. I cannot see anything that is likely to wear out for many years. The midge jaws are (IMHO) unbeatable for the tiny hook sizes and with all three jaw sizes (midge, omni and magnum - two have to be purchased seperately) you can cover pretty much all hook sizes. I also love the way it looks. My budget covered pretty much every model and I went for the Spartan - I think you get an awful lot of vice for the money - albeit in a small package.

But I have met more than one truly fantastic tier who HATES Spartans!

i have the Snowbee Pedestal (non ball joint) and have no complaints what so ever , ive had it quite a while now , the jaws are still as new and the jaws are the same as the essential fly vice as is the pedastal the only thing extra is the bobbin holder but even the likes of Davy Mcphail doesnt use them the only thing that goes wrong is the rubber O ring around the jaws as is on the essential vice as well , the jaws are the main thing that holds the hook the rest is pure cosmetics if you buy either of the above send me a stamped addressed envelope and i will send you a couple of spare O rings PM me if you want address
