A good rule of thumb for nymphs is to make tails half a shank length long - shank not hook.

Take a look here for a very detailed SBS on the Copper John.

Charlie's FlyBox - Colorado's Best FlyShop and online Fly Tying Tutorials

I would also strongly advise buying his book and working through the flies in it - in order - as each builds on skills learnt in tying earlier flies. The skills developed will leave you in good stead for whatever you would want to tie.

(On the first 3 flies you seem to have forgotten to build a thorax. Instead you've built very large heads. There are other tutorials on Charlie's site (or in his book) that will help you with these also.)

Nice flies. Looking at the first one it doesn't look as if you've tied a base of thread around the post before winding the hackle, it might just have separated at the base to show the post material so apologies if I've got it wrong. Have a look at some videos to show how its done. I think you'll find your flies will be much more durable if you do it this way, also a smear of varnish on the base of the post before winding the hackle helps too.

Thanks. I have a couple of books already.
I wasnt really sure what to do with the thorax, the quill was barely big enough to cover the body. I struggled to even reach the post. So i wasnt sure if i should tie in another, or just use the thread to build it up.

Thanks, I didnt
I didnt know you had to do that. It was my first proper attempt at doing parachutes and instead of using a SBS i just tried to copy what i seen in the picture. I will try that tonight though.
Thanks.

Have a look at this tutorial. The quill or biot is only for the body. The thorax is typically dubbed. Also, watch your hackle length. Bang out 15 or so paying close attention to the steps and you'll have the hang of it in no time.

Note that for dries, a useful rule of thumb for tail length is one shank length (as opposed to half a shank length for nymphs). Of course, you can do whatever you want but that's a benchmark.
