As far as i can tell Dabblers are an Irish pattern which were used in a completely different way , a longer rod and held up in the air with the fly just on the surface of the water. Then us Scots used them usually on the bob when using a team of flies , when you were on the "" hang "" the fly brakes, bobs across the surface or through waves and can result in fairly aggressive takes.
I am more than happy to be corrected as i would not like to give the wrong info to anyone.
I can remember on one outing i stuck a dabbler on the bob and was talking to the guy i was fishing with when i looked out to my flies i just seen a large head appear quickly followed by a spade of a tail as the brown turned an swam away.
so dabblers will find there way onto my cast more next season
