Default flies with coloured heads.

i have noticed that some flies, diawl bachs and crunchers mainly, are finished with a coloured head. ie, bright red or bright green. i assume the heads are built up from coloured thread. my question is, is the whole fly tied with this colour of thread or is the body tied with, for example, black thread then whip finished and then a head built up from coloured thread?

cheers,

bob

Normally the whole fly is tied with the coloured thread to save any faffing about changing threads at the head of the fly.

Yeh i think that itll be easier using the same colour as the head, but say you want a black body you can swap to the coloured one after youve done that bit, thats what iv always done

Some also colour code their flies; if the pattern is weighted they give all their weighted patterns the same head colour.

I tie with black /brown and tie off, then change thread to flouro red /green,I do not find this a faff..But also have flies that have black/brown heads.

If I want a bright head on a fly, I will tie the pattern with a pale thread and then use Glo Brite floss to finish the head. A couple of coats of varnish and they really stand out.
On some smaller diawl bachs I will use a bright thread to tie the fly and, by leaving a longer than normal tag when tying on, use the thread as a body rib as well.

...or if you're looking for a more vibrant head, use a white thread underbody. Not a problem if you've created touching turns with whatever material, you've used on the body. Why not give fine holo ago too.

Oooops! Too slow. What Andrew said.

You should keep to what you find easiest for you, dont struggle tying the body in bright coloured thread but just add it in near the end to your preference, just keep practicing
