Default This week I am mostly tying .....Cormorants

Having had great fun the other week with the only Cormorant in my box (black marabou, green body and orange throat hackle type of thing) I thought I'd tie up a few and should these storms ever blow over give them a swim for the stockies

I hears ya! but I wanted to leave them long to get that pulsating effect (the one place I'll be fishing them is a bit murky). I will tie up another set with shorter tails

If I may comment...you're tying them on longshank hooks. IMHO, Kamasan 175's or equivalent is better, or even on a curved grubber hook if your not going to be twiddling/pulling them. You're looking for a cross between a nymph and a sparsely tied mini-lure, least that's the way I view the pattern.

Agree with the above in that they are mroe lure than cormorant but either way they will surely take the stockies they are tied for, loads of movement in that marabou even when fished slow in these colder months,

Ok, thanks for your opinions guys I shall get back to the vice and tie up something smaller and less 'taily', obviously the bought one in my flybox (which must be more lure than Cormorant) is what they were based on and that is a longshank hook with quite a long tail.

I like them in their own right, the second one in particular although like my flies the head could do with a bit of work.

I tie cormorants with a very thin body and just a small pinch of marabou tip. Not had much success with them so far this winter.

Right I've done a bit of browsing on the internet (so many naked women... who knew!) and I think I got the wrong idea about Cormorants (as I said I based it on a fly I had in my box). I've given it another go and come up with this...

....which is more a Cormorant pattern than the others though I have seen them tied with tails. It does need a bit of a trim at the back but I do want a mobile pattern for what I have in mind. Thanks for all your help
