Default First Dabbler

Size 12 Fiery Brown Dabbler. First try at a dabbler, looking at the picture it looks to me that I've tied the mallard to long and haven't cloaked the bottom of the fly enough, what do you think ?

I think you have picked up on all the issues yourself

The hackle maybe a bit heavy but only by 1 turn imo, if you get that wing and throat length sorted you'll have a brilliant fly there

Agree with your own comments, but it will catch fish. Nice colours and very tidy!

Ye Mike, the first thing I do when tying is squash the barb with barb pliers.

I actually quite like that with the longer wing rather than a full cloak.
The fiery brown is very nice and the hackle is good with what looks like 4 turns up the body, in fact the only bit that seems a bit weak is the tail and looks too light.
As for it being your first attempt I think it a cracker

Ye, I see what you mean about the tail, you always think the fly looks good, then you take a picture and you see your mistakes, still it lets you know what to look for on your next attempt.
