Either a using a fly clip or a coarse fishing baiting needle (one of the ones with the hook and the swinging needle bit that closes the hook)

OR

Just buy them

It's practice. I've fingers like sausage rolls but can manage them. Thick end over the the thin end is easier and hold the knot to slide it up and down into position.

Get a wee paper clip, straighten it out and bend a small "barb" on the end; make a hoop in your pheasant fibre, catch it through the middle with your hook, pull it through then roll the knot till it's in the correct place and gently tighten it up

I can only do it with the fibres removed from the stem. I grab the tip in one hand, the other hand gives the base a wee twist, it develops a loop and it's then easy to stick the thick base through the loop.
