Default Nomad

Have the grandson home today with a bad cough but at least I can rest up my ankle.
Anyway we were talking about his fishing and fly tying and I brought up the nomad, which doesn't seem to get as much use as it once did, and I don't know why as it is a deadly little fellow on its day.
After talking we set to and tied these 2 variants, and he hopes to fish them soon.

Intermediate and figure of 8 BUT as with most flies this can change with conditions

Aren't grandkids just fantastic? The times I spend with my two make me feel so guilty; because I'm sure I didn't give my own two kids the same quality time. Having said that, my eldest still refers to the times I used to take them out for peeler crab. I remember one crabbing session with them, the youngest was three at the time, and the sea air and excitement must have got to him. He slept for four hours tucked inside one leg of my waders on the rocks. No. I wasn't wearing them at the time.
Unfortunately they both (32yrs and 27yrs old) take the p!ss out of me for turning to fluffchucking.

To get the best out of the Nomad you need to get the tail working in that sinuous wave that makes the fly so deadly. Try various retrieves close in so you can watch the fly work. You'll know when you get it right- the fly seems to "come to life".
As mentioned, one of the best retrieves is a fig of 8, but another that works really well is short (2-3inch) pulls. Try both intermediate and floater with a long leader.
Best colours in the winter are Glo-bright no. 11 (phosphor Yellow) nose with either black body and tail or white body and tail. The tail should be 11/2 - 2 inches long.
Just make sure the fritz is small- around 6mm rather than the 10-15mm fritz you see on some commercialy tied monstrocities. (Big fritz stops the fly working properly)
Hope this helps

On the two flies above I used Orvis hares ice dub, it seems to work far better than fritz.
This is where home tied flies beat the commercials hands down :thumbs as you can use your favorite materials.

They look good, although I've never had much luck with nomads before.

Hopefully below is a picture of a Nomad (based on Dawsons colours) that I tie and use alot - Its not one for the purist
Tail - Marabou in Yellow (Bottom) & Olive (Top) with added "flash" (don't know the correct name)
Rear Body - 6mm Olive Cactus Chenille
Middle Body - Brass Bead
Head - Red Holographic (varnished)
Hook - Kamasan B170 size 10

As said above it can be fished slow figure 8, but I normally fish it in a varying speed of "flicks" to make the tail pulse with the odd longer pull in between. It's caught alot of fish for me on every still water I've fished. usually on Intermediate line but also works on floater with long leader
