Default Grey Duster Hackle question

Hi, could someone please help with a question concerning the hackle for a grey duster. Would you use silver badger or golden badger? Do you think using a grizzle hackle would make any difference to the fish? Thanks a lot, best, Bobby

I used grizzle cock on a couple of grey dusters when tying a couple of nights ago.

Hopefully the trout dont mind to much

I hope so, too. I also tied some with a grizzle hackle and some with golden badger. To me the grizzle ones look much nicer. WeŽll see next season what the trout think of it. Anyone who uses silver badger? Thanks, Bobby

See Richard Ward's SBS on this forum for the best discussion

I tie both silver and golden badger varieties because you get
A lot of flexibility in matching different flies
At different time

The pattern calls for a cock badger hackle. I find that the dark centre stripe of a badger hackle gives a good impression of a thorax region without adding weight or buck to the fly. I would expect a variant tied with a grizzle hackle to give more of an impression of movement. I'm sure that both patterns would work - on the day, the trout are the only judges that matter.

If you want to tie it true to form silver would be the one to use and no tail.

Dun badgers work nice too Though , say you were fishing a thick mayfly hatch, you could lash many many different hackles to what would be a duster pattern and you would find to have exactly the same success , maybe more, cetainly not less.. Traditionally , silver or golden badgers is the de rigeur for that pattern but mixing things up is the best part of all ..

Silver is certainly a must for the Irish loughs, elsewhere I've had more success with a more golden colour.
