Default dabblers educate me please

Guys
What makes a dabbler a dabbler and not just a palmer?

How many Dabbler patterns are there? Which ones work?

Are Dabblers just for brownie fishing lochs in Ireland and Scotland?

Will bows down south take them or do they show more interest in blobs?

I can't educate you regarding the patterns, I've only just started tying them. However regarding the question will Bows take them, most definitely. Over the last few weeks I've had 15 and 14 bows on two different days on Dabblers

Bows will certainly take them, i use them extensively, have a look at the Classic thread, lots of nice dabblers and variations in it.

The Classics: Dabbler

Cheers guys for the answers.

But what does the fly need to have to become a dabbler?
The log tail?
Why aren't they bumbles or palmers?

The body of a dabblers has a cloaked body of bronze mallard and I believe but stand to be corrected started of life as a golden olive bumble but was further developed.

I read this somewhere, and believe it to be true, however like Dahbhoy i stand to be corrected also

Donald Mc learn of County Down invented the original dabbler the dabbler was basically invented by accident. when he was tying goslings for a comp and had run out of grey mallard he used bronze mallard instead and the dabbler was born.

Best regards
Jim

Dabblers certainly work for Rutland bows ,had a late summer day fishing with a good boat partner and ghillied by the Cocktail cabinet ,my olive sparse dabbler on the point out fished every thing my opo fished untill he stole one of mine and started to even things out ,very dark ones seem to work well for me on Grafham and bewl early season the brighter and lighter tones as spring turns into summer .
