Default The Original Pumpkinhead

If I could only have one fly in my box this would be it. The pumpkinhead is nothing more than a baby woolly ****** but it is the colours that make it irrestistable to trout. I will darn near guarantee that whatever stillwaters you fish you will catch fish on this fly. I will almost beg you all to tie this pattern and give it a go come spring. It's effectiveness only increases when damsels are on their migration.

Several people and flyfishing clubs have put out videos on You Tube and various other forms of media complete with tying instructions. If you google the phrase, "pumpkinhead fly" you will find more info than you need. The original was tied on a size 12 2xl but can be tied from size 14 to size 8.

Enjoy and if you're sold I would love to hear your experiences with the pattern in 2012.

Hi John

Looks similar to one of the variants of the hot head damsel, that have been popular over here for quite a while.
Damsel type lures are my bogey fly. Never catch on them whilst all around me.........
I'm enjoying your flies - last night I tied up a couple of Candystripers and Guns and Roses.

Keep them coming - most interesting.

Hi John;

Will have to tie up a few for my trip to Islay next spring. What are you using for the body, antron or straight wool? I normally tie my Wooley B*ggers in black or rust colors but one does look awfully tempting.

Take care

Terry

Actually, the rust colour variation is more productive for me than the original olive. The body is done with rabbit dubbing with subtle flash mixed in.
