Default Basic materials for a newbie?

Thinking about having a crack at some tying, been looking at vices & tools and have a few ideas there. What would be a good basic selection of materials & hooks to get started, without spending a fortune, for a selection of still-water flies and any recommendations who to get them from (apart form good old ebay of course)?

Cheers, Mark

Fist step is to make a list of your favourite flies (5-10 approx) and post them - I'm sure you'll get some good recomendations as to materials, ease of tying etc.

I don't think you can go far wrong by purchasing or better still been given (if you know some shooters) natural materials to include:

Pheasant tails
Hares mask
Mole patch
Rabbit skin
Deer hair/ bucktail
Partridge skin
Peacock Herl
Should make a reasonable start for you. I have always found natural materials make the more productive flies....then again perhaps I just fish them more . Add some wool, threads and tinsels to your list and your good to go. Hope you enjoy tying, its a good way of filling the winter nights.

Mark, please, if you have one join your local branch of Home & News & you'll not only save many months off your learning curve, but you'll learn a lot faster & dare I say better than by almost any other method.

I contacted my local fly tyers guild on that same link as above, was immediately invited to a meeting and found myself yesterday being enthusiastically tutored by people happy to let me use their equipment to tie my first fly. A greenwell's glory, can't wait to try it out.

They showed me the basic kit I needed, basic materials to start with and some useful tips on starting out. Especially useful was being shown how to tie, and how the fly builds up.

Well worth the effort to find them. I didn't want to buy a vice etc without at least having an idea how they work and what I'd need.
Now I feel prepared to start out. Very helpful people.

Thanks for all the replies. Sadly I don't think the guild have a branch very near me.
