Pheasant shoot at Lauderdale at the weekend. They were calling them 'blue backs'. Plenty of them. Not sure how widespread they are. Interestingly, not one melanistic on the scene. Anyone used the blue back feathers for any tyings?

Being a dopey bastard, I never thought to bring any home

had 2 of them over the weekend. Once plucked out you could use the feathers for tails or feelers, never used tham myself for flies. More than likley better used as a craft feather.

A lovely brace of blue back Several of the feathers can be used for all sorts of flies. I have looked around here and only found 1 melanistic pheasant, the guy wanted $$$ for it, easier to get from your side.

The back feathers are of a very similar structure to those on a golden pheasant. So using them on smaller trout patterns would not be ideal as they are a. quite stiff, & b, the fibres tend to "clump" together a bit, ideal for tails, but not so good for hackles or perhaps wings.
