Default Floating Fry

After fishing Farmoor the weekend and speaking to a few good friends and a celebrity ("He's that guy in the magazine!") and forgetting to get his autography myself... Steve Cullen, Phil Longstaff and I talked flies and lines for a while.

I particularly liked one of his floating fry patterns, a few of these have already made it into my fly box - with more patterns to come.

The bigger the eyes the better, , they give the fly a great focal point. I mean, what do you notice first, the hook or the eye?

What are your favourite floating fry patterns, any pictures?

Hi Craig

They both have something very similar about them but can't quite put my finger on it!

I'm guessing they've both been working great at Draycote?!

In his own world maybe Kieron!!!! Bet there aint many people he hasn't told about that!! Proud of the lad for attempting to empty his fly box......and understanding anything Steve said!

Gonna have a go at that weld you had made between running line & head......it looked awsome! Do you roll the two lines together under an iron and place shrink tubing over the two? I used to be well pleased with my whipped on braided loop connection!

Cheers

Phil

I was going to ask similar, is it a blob of bug bond to build up, then more on top?

That fritz has a nice look with the water on it, where did you get it from?

Thanks.

Jenkins you cleft, that's my secret, deadly, killer!
You can't go showing the world..... OOOPs to late I guess!
Still, it's the way you fish it, big eyes, big fish, it's actually a very small fry pattern, it's all in the eyes and that hook! WOW, what a beauty!
The Fritz is Veniard, Krystal Chenille, nowt like it for fry patterns, the eyes are stuck in place then Bug Bonded, also try silver and red eyes.

As for the wee guy that came up to me , he did well didn't he, a shed load of flies for nowt, Hopefully that 20 minutes blether means he'll get into the sport big time.
A certain youth manager never captilized on things there, silly boy, he could be the next big thing?

Celebrity, my bottom, there are far too many of these in fly fishing, half of them can't fish!
Actually Philip, I have told no one, however I'm sure you've told everyone, shame on you, anyway, keep that rod in your hands at all times and for god sake, remember, one way only!

As for welding Phil, you use shrink tube and just heat it with a lighter. Simples!

The steam from a boiling kettle will do a much better job then a lighter.

Veniards, Krystal Chenille for the body - "nowt like it for fry patterns" quote biggest celeb in fly fishing magazines

I bet too! It'll be a badge before long ... 'Who stole the most flies off Steve on a fishing trip' @ Big water, small water, river etc

Best way i found to stick the eyes on as their so big is to use regular 5 min epoxy, do a batch of around 5-6 to justify using a good amount of epoxy, and then bug bond over that just to make things shiny.

Too much weight young jedi.

A very good trick with epoxy, for non floating patterns is to put more on one side than the other, the weight distribution means it swims all weird, just like an injured fish, Cheers Skateboard Dave, one of the best fly tyers I've ever seen!
