The Wine Killer is a mini version of the common Zonker. Where I live in Western Canada the lakes all have a variety of leeches and most have some blood leeches and if you look at the naturals closely they have a brilliant crimson wine sheen to them which is what inspired this pattern.
Wine Killer
Slip a #8 red silverlined bead onto a Diiachi 1273 #10 and insert into jaws of your vise. (I have also used red tungsten 7/64 beads and different variations of size 10 3xl streamer hooks)
Attach 8/0 wine thread behind bead and wind down to hook bend and attach two pieces of red krystal flash.
Attach 20-25 cm length of 6/0 wine thread and lay over back of vise to be used later and advance your tying thread back to bead.
This is the point where I prepare my zonker strip. Take a 1/8" strip and narrow it down to a width of 1/12th-1/16th of an inch and trim the hair off the first inch of the strip. Turn the strip upside down and while extending over the front of the hook eye lash the hairless section directly behind the bead with strong wraps. Once done trim the tag end of the strip.
Directly behind the strip, tie in small size Wapsi Stretch Tubing in red colour. Using V-Rib, Larva Lace or reasonable facsimile will do just as well. Lash the tubing to the top of the shank down to bend of hook.
At this point tie in a strand of red holographic tinsel.
Wind the holo tinsel up the shank in close touching turns and tie off directly behind the bead and then do the same with the tubing.
Pull the rabbit strip to the back and while holding in your left hand (for righthanded tyers) moisten the thumb and index finger of your right hand and stroke the hair fibers upward revealing a clear space on the hide. This is where that long strand of 6/0 thread comes in. Using the 6/0 bind the back of the strip tightly to the top of the shank with 3 turns and apply two half hitch knots and from the bottom of the shank protect the knots with head cement.
FINALLY! The Wine Killer is complete and ready to fish! Enjoy the action.
