Tin, when i fished stillwaters, I used Snipe and Black, Snipe and Yellow, Greenwells Spider and Black and Peacock Spider. No need for more than that.

Mostly size 16 .....use v light wire hooks to keep them high in the water....tweak them back slowly with the occasional twitch , utterly lethal.

I tied a few last night for the first time in ages. What started me was reading in two diff books about Partridge and Orange using size 12 hooks. Both books said they had great success when nothing else would interest the fish. Both tied on size 12 and not sparse, well hackled. So I thought I'd give it a go. They turned out well and am keen to try them asap.

I would have thought 12s were a bit big for spiders but apparantly not so for P&O. Also, they both mentioned fishing them all year round successfully.

Got me thinking anyway. Nice size to work with.

Chris.

well the few i had in the box were the most simple of all size 14 light wire straight hook,a run of black thread halfway down the body and 2 or 3 turns of black hen,but im looking for a good strong light hook as i think they were b400s did the job but had a tendency to bend after a few,i just had 2 spiders on a cast the length of my rod and just let the wind bring em round with a very slow figure of eight with the occasional pause.

One of my favourites is the Green Lurex spider (sometimes called a Green Priest). Simply green tinsel body and a black hen hackle on a size 12 or 14 B170 hook (I've tried green holo tinsel but in my opinion plain green is better). I give the body a couple of coats of Sally Hansen to add a bit longevity and I regularly use this fly early season to good effect.

I only ever fish to spiders, tied on b160 size 14s, the first one -

Body - Silver tinsel small
Rib - X small silver wire
Head Hackle - Black hen

and the second one -

Body - BLack thread
Hackle - Grizzle hen

Really must givethese a go next season. I love the thought of a minimalistic pattern near the surface for those evenings in summer

cant go wrong with a greenwells glory, snipe and purple, and a black spider easy to tie up and excellent on the waters.

2 books worth investing in for spider patterns are Clyde style flies and north country flies both on amazon excellent books for spider patterns clyde style is particularly good book

The spider I posted recently has been a very productive fly for me. Not sure if it's an original pattern or one I've copied though.
