Default Tiny black fly pattern?

Had mixed success last season with smutting trout. The killer is, those smutters are often big. The daintier the rise, the better the fish . I reckon the bigger more experienced fish always expend less energy rising that their more juvenile friends.

This year, I see John Tyzack uses a size 21 ( Tiemco 103bl) to imitate greenfly . Half the hook length is neat green dubbing , with two cdc wings.

I guess i could do same with black ....but does anyone have any patterns they swear by for those tiny rises to tiny flies trapped in the surface?

I have tried very small Griffiths Gnats , but with below average levels of success....

Tks

The Sturdy's Fancy in a size 18, 20 or 22 does well for me when the fish are smutting. The white hackle might not look right but it is easy to see on the water, which is not always the case with completely black tiny flies.

IOBO Humpy

Brown is the colour I use for smutting trout.

Ties down to a 26 and beyond if you want.

Orvis big eye hooks are godsend if your eyesights going. spidersweb thread or other fine one.

IOBO Humpy

All the best

I tie a small black fly, very similar to the green fly you describe, black thread body, foam thorax and a split aero wing. Can do these down to a 28#. Will try and get a photo up shortly.

I had good success with size 24 griffiths gnat but on the days those didnt work too well i switched to size 24 F fly in black and also in Olive (lightly dressed being the key... some of the F fly you buy in the shops are quite heavily dressed)

I also tried a fly called 'it ought to be banned' this was in size 24 and very lightly dressed. although some would argue not a true dry as its more of an emerger..?

SPIDER - Can you post a picture of the John Tyzack greenfly? I havent seen this one?

I was out with one of John's good friends and there were some real tricky fish that were proving very,m very difficult to tempt!

The green fly never worked but one a size 21 CULDECANON did, this is some fly in all a manner of sizes, but the smaller the better for me.
