Default First attempt at these tube thingy's

No idea what they are called and I'm surprised at how different it is from tying trout flies. I know they are pretty cack so looking for advice on how to improve and any techniques that will help.

Don't know the first think about tube flies but they look bl00dy good to me Tam. Don't think my two weight rod would handle them. What rod is the minimum you'd need to use them ?

Not sure as next year will be my 1st season with a double hander.

I don't think they would be much heavier than a big fat lure

I would fish with any of those ,maybe a tad bigger hackles ,for clearer water a little less bulk .
Important thing is are they solid enough to stand wanging out ,and bouncing of a rock or twenty ,and a few fish chomping them .Have caught salmon on far less elegant tubes, and some that are works of art ,then the works were dressed by someone with far more skill and patience than I have .
For a good suggestion on simple tubes have a look at the Grays of Kilsyth site .

I think they would withstand a bomb going off next to them. That's the one thing I'm good at, Making sure my flees never fall apart. 100% success with my trout flees so I see no reason for these to fall apart.

One thing I don't know is what you said about bulk etc, I have no idea as next year will be my first season. So in what types of water would you have bulkier flies and less bulkier?

Those look good to me

I have never tied any tubes and have thought about it for sea trout as I have all the gear on my old vice for tying them so may be one day.

Think about the colour in the water some rivers you can see your feet wheen you are wading as deep as possible ,there I would be using sparse dressings .When you can only see your fett at wellington depth a bulkier fly comes into play .
As too the toughness of the fly ,tubes do get a good beating amongst the rocks ,and in my case trying to catch in the trees on the far bank
Hope your salmon fishing next year is great ,that first fish will sear it self on your memory for ever.

For a first time tube tyer they are very good. But as has beensaid, the dressing is a little over done, but the cones look well attached.

Well done, your not that far away from your first order

Roger sparse is good for clear water. I'll save the ones I've tied in the photos for dirtier water.

I'll tie up some more tonight and post. One think I am struggling with is to make sure the finished head isn't too bulky before I put the conehead on, as it's a struggle to actually get the conehead on.

Thanks for all the comment so far. Huge learning curve here but your comments are really helping.
