Default Hope this might help if you’re looking for red Peacock herl

Having watched Davie McPhail’s superb tying of the Bibio Dial Bach I searched high and low for hours looking for the bright red herl he used. I eventually found feathers at Carnmeal Cottage and bought some and terrific value they are too. They normally charge £7.50 for delivery because the complete feather is packed in a special container and delivered by courier but when I asked them to snip each feather into pieces and pop them in an envelope they were happy to oblige.

Pricey postage!

Red (and other colours) available here at more sensible postage:

Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

Kind regards

Thanks for that link spidersplus. Had a look at the Davie McPhail video of the Bibio Diawl Bach that you mentioned and it just screams "fish catcher".
Will have to buy some of the ingredients and tie some!!

John.

Hiya Phil,

I don’t advocate any supplier’s product over any others I just posted this thread here because the Carnmeal’s feather colour was by far the clearest and brightest red I found. When I was searching for red Peacock herl whenever I found any I bought some, including some of yours. All were perfectly fine in their own right just not as bright a red that’s all. Your Tan colour is a great colour too and I shall be ordering some of those shortly.

just a note on the bleached and dyed peacock herl (from anywhere and from any manufacturer) -

i bought some in the USA and when i received it, the amount of herl remaining was considerably less than a non bleached and dyed herl. this should be due to the bleaching & dyeing process. head out tou your local fly shop and inspect the contents of the package BEFORE buying.

remember bleaching is one of the the processess to REMOVE the herl from the quill

You need to get some white peacock feathers, then dye those to get a good vivid colour. I have looked around the net and found quite a few suppliers (mainly wedding people) but they are really expensive.

I've made the assumption that the bibio diawl won't be any better than a red holo ribbed one anyway so have stopped looking.
