Mark,
My spider box carries a several different patterns and versions to cover eventualities. I agree with your sentiments. However, there are days when a spider will out fish a nymph - especially if they are taking from just beneath the surface. If you don't fish spiders much, I urge you to give them a go.
Upstream dead-drift can be fantastic. Or fish them in place of a nymph when fishing NZ style.
Hen and Game hackles can impart movement into your fly that can be tricky to get from other materials and styles of tying. I even use soft hackles on more heavy-weight patterns. I have found that this can be the difference between a fish taking and not. As for colous - they are so quick and simple to tie, there's no reason not to experiment IMO.
I have regularly watched fish reaction to spider and am uttlery convinced by their effectivness.
I love nymph fishing for trout & grayling; I love fish spiders too. Come to think of it I love fishing dry flies too.
Hope we can catch up soon,
D.

What is the catch rate on them compared to a PTN or a GRHE etc? I am not pouring scorn on them just interested to know. I like basic easy tie flies few materials. Those are few materials but another colour, etc., etc..
We all get a bit carried away with trying to tie the 'ultimate fly', the cutting edge and so on, would be interested in your view. I know you for no fuss catch um flies.
I do appreciate the purity and simplicity of you ties, just interested. No Rob D rant please.... (Sorry Rob).
Cheers,
Mark
