Default Beetle (Variant?)

I have been trying to think of new patterns I could practice tying on, just for a bit of variety, I looked up different beetle patterns, but not really very good results, or I didn't have the materials, so I made up my own tell me what you think

Tied on a size 10 hook, with dark green glister dubbing as the body, black foam for the shell/back and claret straggle fritz as the legs

I view of the underside, to show the little bit of flash in the glister dubbing underneath

Sorry about the picture quality, I am using my sister's compact camera, bad macro...I am currently trying to find a camera that would be good for my kind of use.

Which brings me onto my next subject, what kind of cameras do you use? Or what kind of camera would you recommend me to buy? I'm looking more at DSLR's for macro and good zoom and action photos, obviously different lenses could help with this. It's not really essential that I get help with this, I'm just curious on what cameras you use and would recommend.

It looks pretty good James I'm sure under the right conditions it will catch fish.

Thanks BK, what would you classify as the right conditions, all I can think of is the time of year when there are lots of beetles about, and if it was windy, so that there would be other, real, beetles on the water, would this be a good situation to be fishing it?

Best Regards

I always carry a wee beetle pattern just like that.
Works a treat in rivers and stillwaters.

Thanks for the replies, flytyingguy, when you say fish the beetle on the point a hopper on top and a snatcher in the middle, how do you attach the three flies to the line? I've heard about this tons of times before, but never found out how to do it and thanks for telling me the time of year/conditions to fish it, very useful

To tie the dropper on is simple, start of with a 15ft (To start off with - i use an 18ft or 21 ft eader, depending on what im fishin)leader, tie on the loop the loop etc and youve got yer leader tied onto the line, cut an extra 8 inches off the spool of nylon and measure roughly 5 ft away from the loop, put the leader along side the 8 inch dropper, wet it with saliva and form a loop with the 2 bits of nylon, kinking the up and the saliva keep em together, get the two tag ends going away from the loops and put them both through the loop which you're still holding, do this twice then tighten then loops up by pulling all the nylon ends and tightening, snip the tags ends and WALA, try this first with bits of string and then master it with this

Very very sorry, but I'm afraid I'm not really much closer to understanding this I think I'm just a bit dim when following instructions

Nice beetle James. Got some similar myself. Remember, beetle don't float too well and will soon sink. This season seems to have been beetle heaven. Can be fished throughout the season, not just May,June, July. Loads out in April this year. Do a variety of colours, black, brown, light brown, green, olive, orange. Also vary the size.

As far as I know James has only been flyfishing twice . A 15ft leader with droppers on might cause him problems . I think a leader the same size of his rod and the one fly would be better for him for now
