Default UNI Thread 8/ breaking.

Been having trouble with Uni thread 8/ breaking when tying.
These are the 200 yrds spools, colours are black, red and olive. Thread been breaking at all stages of tying. I have used different bobbin holders and whip finish tools. I know one or tow others had posted about thread breaking, I've tying for 30 years and thread snapped in my early days due to cheepos and too much tread tension.
The Uni 6/ is fine and so to the Uni 17/ Trico. Its just the 8/ which I use most.
I think it may have too much twist during manufacture/spooling on spools.
I can sometimes feel it grate during tying so have to pull several yards of the the spool and untwist before respooling. A right pain but does seem to help. Also notice when threading on bobbin holder, any slack thread twists up on itself. I've not had any problems with UTC.

Maybe there was some inconsistency when it was wound, or it caame from the end of a bulk spool where it had been under more tension/pressure than the rest of the thread. These spools often have in excess of 20,000 mts on them. It might have started to get affected with exposure to u.v. if it was made some time ago. Send it back or sling it.

I dont suppose you have been using wire through your bobbin holder as this can cause thread breaking problems.
I keep a bobbin just for wire now.

Cheers for the replies guys.
Mike, I don't use a bobbin holder for wire.
Just notched up a couple of files using the black and it's behaved itself so far this afternoon, this morning was terrible along with the red and olive.

I have had a couple of spools of 8/0 uni thread that were completely unusable. I think they used the wrong formula of wax or something as the thread was distictly greyer than other spools of the same colour and it kept breaking in unusual places, i.e. halfway between the hook and the bobbin holder, so it wasn't the holder or the hook point at fault.
They both came out of the same batch of spools but the otehrs were fine. I gave up after about 10 breakages on each spool and binned them.

I guess in all manufacturing there are "rejects" and quality control on spools of thread must be pretty difficult

I still think uni thread is the most consistent brand for most applications.

I've had the same with only one of the spools I bought recently. Infuriating. Sections of the thread were coming off the spool a little frayed and then almost disintegrating under the weight of the bobbin holder (ceramic).

Hi

As a retailer of Uni threads it is clear that sometimes a whole batch of a colour that I buy (I buy 20 spools at a time) is suspect and breaks for no reason.
Black is the by and far the worst colour for breakages - this is probably because of the harsh dying process needed to get a jet black colour, and this dying probably weakens the thread.
There is no solution other than just chucking the spool and trying another one.

Paul

I've used the black again today without any problems, the olive still grates and
I take care when using it. Constantly untwisting it of the spool then re-spooling.
I have noticed that anything dyed black can become brittle. Had a cock's cape totally break up.
Cheers for the feed back.

I have to agree with you Paul if I get a bad spool it ends up in the bin and start again mind you I have only ever had a couple and it is usually good quality.

Guess I,ve been lucky as used to get lots of breaks when I used cheapo thread, but so far okay with proper threads.
