Default Sea Bass flies

Here are my first home tied clousers, mackerel flashers and sandeel bass flies. All made up, but roughly equate to known patterns out there (other than the popper, he was a bit of a 'fun fly').

Quick photo shoot last night:

All the eyes are hand painted, as I had a whole load of copper dumbells in my tying box. The materials are goat hair (black, orange) and golden retriever (for the pale colour!). Hook sizes range from 8 long shank for the small one's, to 4/0 for the big clouser. Most are tied on size 1, including the popper.

Looking forward to testing them out this weekend

125 views and no one likes them..? I'll get back to the vice...

Gave up on the Bass so went inland Pike hunting last Saturday. The pike loved the mackerel flies! Though the popper was a bast*ard to cast, I'm going to have to redesign the cork shape I think.

Sorry mate. You are spot on. I've missed your flies, but 125 views and no pat on the back, or constructive criticism, on a fly forum, isn't on.

I've never fished for bass but I love the idea of tying flies for them, and as you say, I really don't think there's any difference in bass and pike flies.

Here's one I just knocked up a few weeks back after buying some large hooks to have a go. Over the winter I'll be tying some more and hopefully learn more about flies for bass and pike.

Why should that be when the fish is called a European Sea Bass.

Bass (fish)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the fish bass. For other uses, see Bass.

Bass ( /ˈbęs/) is a name shared by many different species of popular gamefish. The term encompasses both freshwater and marine species. All belong to the large order Perciformes, or perch-like fishes, and in fact the word bass comes from Middle English bars, meaning "perch."[1]

"The European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, also known as Morone labrax, is a primarily ocean-going fish that sometimes enters brackish and fresh waters. It is also known as the sea dace. Highly regarded as a food fish, it is often marketed as Mediterranean seabass, bronzini or branzini (branzino is the name of the fish in Northern Italy; in other parts of Italy, it is called spigola or ragno). In Spain, where, due to its popularity, it is farmed, it is called lubina or róbalo, and in France bar commun.

The European bass is a member of the Moronidae family. The name Dicentrarchus derives from the presence of two dorsal fins. It has silver sides and a white belly. Juvenile fish maintain black spots on the back and sides, a feature that can create confusion with Dicentrarchus punctatus. This fish's operculum is serrated and spined. It can grow to a total length of over 1 m (3.3 ft) and 15 kg of weight."

The point I was making (though it may not have been clear) was that you can call it what you like Bass or Sea Bass it doesn't really matter. Nice flies by the way.

Nice fly guyfromlaw - looks like that colourful underbody has salmon fly heritage?

As you say - I don't see a lot between large Sea Bass/Pike flies - surface or sinking - they are imitating the same thing: a panicking prey item!

I've tried tying up a few clouser style flies with big muddler heads on instead of the weighted eyes to try for them both off the top, will let you know if I have any luck

Here's a couple I took the other day on the mackerel fly:

Nice Jacks buddy. And yeah many salmon flies are imitating bait fish or sand eels and like you say when I sit down to do a fly off the top of my head, the old habits die hard.
