Craigie, Waldron vices are no longer made. The ones that do come on the s/h market reach far above their original price. If you mean a Snowbee Waldron, that's a totally different kettle of fish.

Go with the jvice, i met the man himself when i visited South Africa, top bloke who makes a superb vice with lots of accessories.
I used it
Although i didn't use the rotary action it does work very well.
His link is on my website.
Cheers

Hi There,

I am not a regular poster on this site but watch this forum with interest for the trends in the rest of the world and it is great to see one of our local products get such good reception outside of the country.

I have one of these Vices with the Pro Jaws and am incredibly happy with it. I have tied flies from size 18 to 4/0 on it and all hook sizes are held solidly. Some people locally have complained that the hook holding ability is not fantastic, but most of those people have not read the instructions on how to tighten the cam with a hook in the jaws. When you get it right (and it is quite simple) it will hold the hooks very well.

I think the Pro Jaws are a massive improvement on the original jaws which always had me feeling like my left hand (tying right handed) did not have enough space behind the fly to work freely. I do have big hands though. With the Pro jaws i feel i have the extra space to attach materials without any obstruction.

If you are into tying really small flies you can also get the midge jaws which I believe will hold really small hooks but i have not tried it so can't judge how well it works. I can say that up to size 18 hooks on the pro jaw are not a problem at all so you won't need the midge jaws for that.

The other impressive thing about the J-vice and it's accessories is the amount of thought that has gone into each of them, with advise from top fly tyers locally and abroad it has evolved into a fantastic tying tool. The Vice and it's wooden stand are very versatile in the way that they can be set up. The vice shaft can be attached to the front of the base, or two positions on the left of the base depending on your preference, or where you might be tying. The base also has holes along the back raised area to place all your tools, plus in the base there are drilled out larger holes for you to put your varnishes, super glue etc.

The rotary function works really well and is nice and smooth - I have never had another true rotary vice so have nothing to really compare it to.

Before I got my J-Vice all i wanted was a LAW vice, but bought the J-Vice until such time as i could afford the LAW. Since i got my J-Vice i have not really thought about buying a LAW. I am completely and utterly happy with my J-vice and i think that if you end up buying one, you really will be too.

Here is a link to discussions of this vice on one of our local forums:

Jvice Vs Renzetti

pls excuse the fighting in some posts - we can be a fiery bunch sometimes, but this thread will more than likely tell you all the pros and cons (limited in my opinion) of this vice.
