Default Popa Caddis

Has anyone tied Ollie Edwards Popa Caddis, as shown on Essential-skills.tv? Was wondering what the materials are ....raffene.....deer hair?

Anyone fished it?

It's the least convincing of Ollie's creations I think. Sound in it's theory and concept, but of limited practical use when compared to more established methods of imitating the sub surface adult caddis such as wet fly (esp.'Eden bustard) and conventional nymph.
I always got the feeling it was a bit part player devised to flesh out the 'flytyer's masterclass'.

I consider Ollie's tying skills, ingenuity and knowledge of entomology as exemplary, a true master!

However, personally i have not seen any of his patterns that i could be @rsed tying, simply because i would never fish with them! Well, O.K. maybe his Sculpin job, but simplified.

I kind of agree lads. I really like ollie, but i also found his Tape Wing caddis useless, as compared to, say, the DHE by Bob Wyatt.

Cassis emergers is a definite area for improvement for me next season but one i need to try more is Gary La Fontaines sparkle caddis......

Matt, what's your favourite nymph for imitating caddis, high up in the water?

Tks...

Check the super pupa , a Swedish pattern that is really effective fished in tandem with a DHE or similar and the most simple tying imaginable....PJ

Tied his Ryac and Cased Caddis patterns up too very good effect. Both these patterns can be simplified by removing the fiddly leg bits and then its just a case of getting segments right and having some decent scissor skills. I liked the legs on the Cased Caddis but only ever used normal pheasant fibres, **** paying out for a golden pheasant for maybe ten patterns worth. Found the legs on the Ryac too be horrible and fiddly too work with, often they would just fall out. Beatis Nymph was easy enough too tie after 3 or 4 mediocre attempts, never invested in the kit too make a Heptaginid.

Above said, If i used any of these patterns with a size 12/14/16 Copper Beaded, Pheasy Tail with a Fire Orange thorax, the simplicity of the Pheasy Tail would win out. And the fish agreed aswell
