of course it depends upon the time of season but irish limestone rivers have loads of up-winged flies, sedges, smuts, buzzers, shrimps, beetles, ants, small fish fry etc etc.
What river are you intending to fish?

olive patterns like The Large Dark Olive, Blue winged olive, Iron Blue dun, medium olives, etc etc would be a good start, then nymphs goldheads etc in various sizes, klinkhammers, dry sedge, all the usual stuff.

have a look at this link it will give some more info.

there,s a pheasant tail nymph that works really well and it includes a but of pink in it at the thorax.

Bead: Gold tungsten bead 2.8mm.
Tail: 5/6 strands of red game cock hackle.
Rib: medium gold wire, not too heavy or not too fine, brassie type is about right.
Body: 5 strands of Pheasant tail.
Thorax cover: size 10 pearl tinsel.
Thorax: 1/3 pink dubbing 2/3 Fox squirrel dubbed on. pull the pearl tinsel over the top and tie down. Pick out the fox squirrel with a dubbling needle, dont pick out the pink dubbing.

the devaux sedge shown above with a less pointy wing, more of a blunt wing. deer-hair sedges, ethafoam sedge, cdc and elk, but my favorite without doubt is the squirrel hair sedge, this sedge pattern is excellent on still and flowing water, even better that the devaux. apart from thread only 3 materials are needed.

Hook size 16, dryfly hook, something simple like kamason b170 works for me.
size 8/0 tan or camel thread.
body very fine non sparkle dubbing like flyrite, colour to match adult sedge ie light brown, ginger or tan.
Wing fox squirrel. wing must be tied low and neat and must not 'fan' out.
Hackle: light ginger or honey clipped underneath.

no not put gink, aquel etc on the squirrel, it ruins it.

a little tricky to tie properly but well worth the effort .

if a trout refuses it well then
