Default Tying without a Vice

I have finally got fed up with not being able to tie any flies due to a lack of a vice...so I have had a go without, just holding the hook between two fingers, and I tied a PTN, not the easiest and i did it on a size 12, so kind of made it hard for myself.

Body could have been a bit longer but it's a passable effort.

Maybe this will inspire some of you to have a go tying without a vice? It'd be a bit of fun

Well done.

I fished the Dove witha guy who tied everything by hand very often incorporating the tippet into the pattern with bits and bobs out of his bag.

If it didn't work (catch) he'd chew the dressing off with his teeth and start again.

Oh how I wish had photographed him in action.

A good shill to have

Brilliant mate. I tie snake flies in the hand as I find it easier than using two vices, and that inspired me to try tying other flies without a vice, egged on by some mates of course. It becomes second nature with practice. Well done.

Thats sounds like something we all need to know how to do, although it does sound quite time consuming, then again, worth it if the method catches a few nice fish, and it means he was prepared for anything the fish may be feeding on

If you normally use two vices the flies must have two hooks, how on earth is it possible to tie a fly in hand with two hooks!? Would you be able to post a picture of one of these flies? My internet is being stupid and I can't search the flies.

Managed it myself, also use to have a hand held vice, again managed a few flies. Couldn't be bothered carrying materials as too much stuff as it is.

I think a lot of people were actually taught how to tie without a vice at first, i only tried it because I saw someone tie a classic salmon fly without a vice on YouTube, and thought I'd have a go too, and I really wanted to tie a fly anyway
