I am guessing that you mean the rotating type. Go to your local model shop and buy a battery driven motor (adjustable speed). A bit of wood and closed cell foam and hey presto you'll have a dryer much cheaper than the marketed versions.

Superb. The tackle tarts will be horrified though.

To be honest don't trust those things, surely the spinning will make the varnish on the flies go out of place? I don't really know, just my thoughts.

Just found this.

DIY Epoxy Rotor - Build your own epoxy-drying rotor out of some scraps and a disco mirror ball motor - Global FlyFisher

Ah, great link Gander I now understand how they work, only spin just fast enough to keep the varnish/epoxy in place.

It is gravity that makes the varnish go out of place. On a slowly spinning dryer, the movement keeps the varnish uniformly distributed; not allowing it to run in any one direction and build up.

It is key however, to make sure that the dryer does not rotate too fast or centrifugal force will have an adverse affect.

Edit - I see you've worked it out from the link.

Here is the Stonefly version - a really neat little unit:

Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

As Gander says, the dryers rotate at about 7 revolutions per minute, just enough to help minimise sagging and orange peeling on varnished or epoxied patterns.

Kind regards
