Default Newbie to tying flys: Advice needed.

Hi there,

Well i thought it was time for me to take up a new hobby for the winter months and really i am looking for advice on what is the essentials needed for tying flys also who is the best person to buy materials from. If anyone out there has got any materials for me to practice with that would be great and point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Graham

Hi Graham, to begin with, you will need a vice, as a first vice I would go with the snowbee fly mate, they have great reviews and have the features of a vice £150 more expensive (rotary function e.t.c) they only cost £35 - £50 (I think) I am borrowing a vice for now, but if I can I will try to buy one of these myself.

I have only been Fly Tying for about 4 or 5 weeks, and haven't got hundreds of different tools or materials, the basics with do for a few hundred flies for sure

The only tools that I have are, scissors (Dr slick, one of the best makes of tools), Ceramic bobbin holder, dubbing needle, half hitch tool you could use a whip finisher if preferred), hackle pliers, dubbing brush (lolly pop stick with velcro stuck on), wax, and a dubbing twister if you prefer dubbing loops, but it doesn't really matter.

For materials, Veniards seems to be the biggest supplier, but I may be wrong, the only places I have been to look at materials are online. But the best thing to do is go to a shop and speak to people who have been fly tying for years, that is the best way of getting information.

Here are a few websites that are very good for fly tying tools/materials

Fly-tying materials and fly tying tools and accessories - Lakeland Fly-Tying
Fly Tying Materials, Fly Tying Equipment, Fly Fishing, Fly Tying – Fly Tying Boutique
Fly Fishing Tackle, Fly Tying Tools & Materials for Trout & Salmon
Sportfish - Fly Fishing Tackle and Fly Fishing Equipment
Fly Fishing Tackle, Fishing Equipment, Fishing Waders, Fly Reels, Mail Order Fishing Tackle | Fishtec
Fly Tying Materials from Funky Fly Tying

Hope this helps, if I think of or find any other websites I will post them on this thread

Of course NEVER say no to anything that people may want to send you (I'm afraid I haven't got anything to offer as I have just started fly tying myself) And the classifieds section of this forum is brilliant too, always something to found there for a very good price

Hi James,

Thank you very much for that. Omg there is so much needed just to get started i guess this is going to be just as expensive as fishing its self in the long run.

I will check out the websites you have given me and likewise if i find any i will post them on this thread to to help people like me that visit this page.

I have got some tools ie vice ( only a cheap one mind ) and i have hackle pliers and bobbing holder but i don;t have dubbing needle or half hitch tool or dubbing brush or wax now i am starting to get confused with all the things you need just to tie some fly's lol...

I guess i better look into this a little more as this could end up costing a small fortune and as i am unemployed don't really have alot of funds. Given that this year has cost me a fortune in rods trying to find the right one for me. I have got some money coming for christmas which i was going to use buying some bits to get started. So i need to prioritise what things i need most.

Many thanks again

Graham

It is good that you have got some tools and a vice already, a cheap vice to begin with is really the best thing to do, because then if you want to upgrade to something more expensive and of higher quality you can choose the vice which suits your fly tying methods or techniques. To be honest, the only tool that you really need now is a dubbing needle, but any normal needle stuck into a peice of wood (bamboo) will be just as good, I only use mine to apply varnish to the finished fly. It is relatively easy to tie a half hitch or whip finish by hand....

I will recommend a couple of books too, The Fly Tying Bible and Fly tying For Beginners, they will probably give you an insight to what tools and materials you may want.

Hi Graham

The best thing you can do is get a list of fly's that you want to tie up and just buy the stuff to do the fly's you want m8 .

I would say give Paul at the flytying shop a phone and explain to him that your just starting out and and tell him the fly's you want to tie and i am sure he will be able to sort you out m8 .

BT pips me at the post

Hi Graham welcome to the wondeful world of fly tying Just try to keep things simple to start with and I wouldn't advise going and buying every willnilly material available. Start off with a list of say 5 good begihner flies that you would like to learn to tie, then just get whatever materials would be needed to tie these 5 flies. Threadwise you could get away with useing just brown to start with, say a UTC thread 8/0 which will keep you going for a while. Once youv'e got some decent tying practice in with these 5 flies, pick another 5, maybe slightly more challenging than the last 5 and get the materials needed for these 5 flies, you might be able to use materials that you already have for these. Like I say keep it simple and within your capabilities, nothing too adventurous to start with. I would also say practice some techniques first, for instance try and master the use of thewhip finishing tool by just practicing on a large hook until you can do it fairly easily, but at first it will seem really difficult but it will come with practice and don't forget there is loads of instructional clps on youtube and masses of valuable info on this forum if you put in a search and ask for advice on here ....happy tying.

Hi Guys,

Thank you again for all the comments but i am one of those people that don't like to start with the easiest things first. The fly's i tend to use at the minute as you will know Andy hehehe. is the good old Caddis fly, Hopper's and daddy long legs. Yes i do need to sort out the whip finish and i am hoping to get round to you Andy so you can help me out on that one hehehehe.

Many thanks

Graham

My advice on this one is too definitely not run before you can walk with fly tying. I agree with wingman about starting with a few simple patterns until you get the basics sorted. I would suggest

black and peacock (learn hackling)
hares ear (learn dubbing)
pheasant tail (learn ribbing)
simple buzzer (learn to lay a good flat thread base)

and as you want to tie one I would include a caddis (CDC and elk or similar) as they are IMO the most straight forward of the flies you mentioned.

Hoppers and daddies will almost certainly have you frustrated if you tried starting with them and the flies above will only need a small number of materials so will be cheap to practice with.

Two more bits of advice, post pics of your flies on here, people will help tell you where you need to improve and where you are doing well. If possible look for a flydressers guild near you, I wasn't lucky enough to have one nearby but if you do they will drastically shorten your learning curve.

Dan

Hi Danielp,

Thank you for the advice and i see your point about starting on the easy ones first it does sound like a plan to me.

I will look into what i need to get started on them and like you say go from there i just don't want to tie too many flys up that i am not going to use if you see my point guess i could give them away to someone who is new to the forum that way everyone benefits out of the forum.

So what hooks are best to get just cheap ones to practice with ?

many thanks
Graham
