Default Pearsalls silk colours

I have started using spiders over the last year or two and this winter I will be tying up a good few, I have assembled most of what I need and have just aquired about 40 old spools of pearsalls silks. age wise they are all on wood spools some marked 45m some marked 50 yds so they must be nearly as old as me
Having fun deciding what colours they are as the colour charts I have located dont really match up with any

anyhow as a starter I wondered which orange shade you thought these were?.

Coasty,

Take a look here for a current colour chart:

Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

Bear in mind that Pearsalls were really bad at keeping track of the dye mixes so batches of the same shade varied over the years.

At first sight, the spool on the left could be original 6B; the spool on the right looks very close to the original 6A. However, the right hand spool could be no. 19 - wet the silk to see if it turns "hot".

Kind regards

Marazion,

As far as I am aware, Classic Chestnut is a relatively "new" colour, ( 10 - 15 years) - only available on plastic spools...

Kind regards

Looks like 6b (left) and 6a (right) circa 1985 to me. From recollection, 19 was brighter.

I was only going on what knowledge I gained from rooting through this lot.
