Default Heron Hackles/Tandem hooks

A friend of a friend of a friend has passed away and I have his flytying materials to sort through to see what is any good, whilst sorting through I have come across about a dozen packets of Heron Hackles (Grey and Black) in Veniard packets , I have always thought it was illegal to have heron feathers in your possesion as it is a protected bird but at some time it must of been legal to own them hence the Veniard packets.
What do I do with them?

There are also about a 1000 Tandem hooks (he must of been a salmon angler) which are a xxlong shank hook with a small hook welded above the eye, what were they used for?

I think the hooks are for live/deadbait fishing. Probably for minnows.

Chris.

The Heron spey hackles are much sought after particularly in the US where they are used in steelhead patterns ,the tandems less so as they are believed to be poor hookers ,have recently seen a few pike fly patterns tied on tandems. PJ

Probably used for making snap tackles for pike/zander dead-baiting?

Nooo! I remember seeing the tandem hooks in the dim and distant past. They were both single hooks, small one soldered to the large one, and I think they were used for worms.

The tandem hooks are indeed for worms. Specifically for fishing for Salmon. They were similar to the Stewart Tackle which was a worming rig but with seperate hooks on a wire trace.

As a cotlector of hooks I might be interested in them, I have a few dozen but would like to see a photo or sample if possible?

As for the Heron, It is now a protected species and the trade in Heron is illegal unless you can prove it has either been killed legally (you can get a licence to shoot them if you're a fish farmer) or was obtained legally pre the legislation and those in the Veniard packets should be fine to sell on.
I'd seek out the traditional spey tiers or, if you pm me, I'll give you a few names who might want them.

Cheers

Thanks Chris
I will post some photos later so that you can see what the hooks are.
With regard to the Heron Hackles I will keep some of them because I would like to do a set of framed Salmon flies but the others I will pass on to interested parties, the main reason for posting was to make sure I could legally keep them.
