Looks great Stevie, are spiders better when they are sparsely dressed like that (i.e. hackle, thread and a rib) or are they just as good with extra materials like dubbing, one of the spiders I have done is the hare's ear spider, it has partridge hackle, a bright orange rabbit dubbing hotspot just behind, then a hare's ear dubbing body with a rib.
Would that be just as effective?

James

We discussed this last month and the consensus was that, yes, they probably are better tied sparsely.

Spider question

But then again, heavily dressed versions will catch. Moral - never argue with a trout

hi fishyjames, i like to have a selection of spiders.

some with long sparsely dressed long hackles and some with heavier shorter hackles. just play about with them and get them the way you like them.

i don't think there is a right or wrong way

Thanks fortbhoy, some useful help there, I like tying wet flies and spiders, so will get plenty of practice, and I'm pretty sure I'll start tying them my own way, but for now, I'm keeping to the true patterns

Looks like a buzzer with a hackle! hot spot spiders work well but.........

One of the deadliest spiders you can fish (well for me anyway) is a mirage body tied short, extra fine gold wire rib (3 turns) then coated in clear varnish so its like glass, finish with a turn of partridge.
