Default Water boatman

Hi Guys

Whilst gutting the two rainbows and one Blue trout i got today i had a poke about to see what they had been eating ? Two nothing ....the third a ruddy great big black water boatman half inch long !! Never seen one so big it was in perfect condition. Obviously trout eat them but what fly do we use to copy them ?? Do we ?

Englander P.S The water boatman was in such good condition and so cool i put it in a little bag in the freezer Don't tell the wife

Englander,

A corixa pattern, fished in the shallows should do you proud.

If it was that big it might have been a great diving beetle

1/2x1/4" is about as large as a Corixa will get, if it was any larger in either dimension then it may have been a small Diving Beetle as FF points out. They are truely nasty beasties, I've found them dead at about 2 1/2x3/4".

Hi Guys

Well here is my "first" atempt i wanted it "BIG" so its tied on a size 10 grub hook ,under wired body hares ear with gold ribbing, shell phesant tail varnished, legs noted phesant. Its ok took ages but first ones often do

Any ideas how to improve it ? The beelte was black but i understand they look silver under water as the have a trapped air bubble ?

Going to try it tomorrow at bangour

Ditto. Would be a good Freshwater Louse pattern in a smaller size too.

Default Figure this out

Two fish I caught recently had a lot of water boatmen in them when I gutted them back home. having gone through the card I eventually caught them on a Montana!

I don't like Great Diving Beetles, and the larval stage is even more ghastly....here's one eating a stickleback:
