I just wondered just how big you guys go with your sedge patterns ? And more importantly what sizes do you find most effective ?

Some natural sedges are big, need hook size to match. I have sedges ranging from little 16s standard to 12s long shank. I also tie on sedge hook from 10s to 16s.

That's a Great Red Sedge you have there and is sometimes best respresented on Captain Hamiton 8 and 6 's. I prefer to tie G&H style for the big stuff as it is such a robust pattern.

My last lot I tied up on Captain Hamiltons but reversed the tying as the bend of the hook provides a keel effect that wayand they fish fast water much more like the naturals.

Have you seen Mr Jardine's article in the current issue of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying.

There's a nice Roe and Hare pattern in there.

Tonight I spotted the smallest sedges I have ever seen on a local ressy. I am beginning to believe they vary is size somewhat from year to year. ???/

I have fished sedge patterns as big as size 4 and smaller patterns such as 12s and caught fish.....I would tie them in a range of sizes and colours...you just never know!

It amazed me when the bigger sizes worked as well.....
