Default Deer Hair

I've just bought some deer hair, not sure why but I thought it would be a good idea at the time! Can anyone recommend a fly to tie that's quite easy considering I've never tied with the stuff before? Ideally a pattern that doesn't require a stacker to prepare the hair as I haven't got one yet.

Is it normally used in wet or dry flies? I have no idea if it floats or sinks

As always any help would be greatly appreciated

Rob.

Hi Rob

This is an easy one

Deer Hair Sedge

or this.

Dry Fly 'Expert': Nondescript Sedge...

I tried this for the first time the other day and the fish loved it. Thanks again to Gander for posting.

Gander's Winter Project.

I wouldn't worry too much about the stacker. I don't use one. It can be a bit fiddly getting the tips roughly level but personally, I find roughly level is good enough. I doubt that the trout mind too much.

Deer Hair is used mostly in dries as it's hollow and floats well. Try a few deer hair emergers or such. If you want practise google up some muddler minnows. They'll give you loads of practise and will bring fish up-they also create a wake to wake them up. I managed without a hair stacker for years and even though I now have one I often forget to use it.

What kind of deer hair did you get Robbie as some are more suited to certain types of flies.

Thanks for the replies everyone and thanks for the links Bill - will give them a go

Dabhoy - this is the stuff I got (natural): Veniard Deer Hair - just noticed it says 'very buoyant' in the description.

Thanks Bill! I'll have a go at that this evening although I bet it's harder than it looks
