Default Advice on fly tying materials and equipement

EDIT Just noticed, i cant spell equipment.

Hi,

I was thinking about trying to tie my own flies (wets and nymphs in sizes 12-14) and I have a few questions, which i hope you could help me with.
  1. What's the difference in the thread sizes? I have seen 6/0 and 8/0?
  2. Do i need waxed thread or just normal thread?
  3. What would be good starting thread colours? I was thinking black, brown and maybe red / olive.
  4. Can I use normal varnish as I can steal from my misses or should I stick to the Fly stuff?

What materials should i buy to start which will make the most of my money? I have saw the following

ebay - fly tying kit: eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

or

Vice: Pro AA Vice For Fly Tying Adjustable Vice | eBay

Tools: FLY TYING TOOL KIT | eBay

Materials - from Grommits shop: Veniard Beginner's Guide to Fly Tying Materials Pack

Basically, I am stuck and unsure what i should get to tie nymphs and wet flies for brown trout fishing next year in rivers.

Thanks for your help,

graeme

1. What's the difference in the thread sizes? I have seen 6/0 and 8/0? 8/0 is thinner, used for smaller hooks like below 14 s roughly.
2. Do i need waxed thread or just normal thread? Buy the normal stuff and you can wax it if you need to
3. What would be good starting thread colours? I was thinking black, brown and maybe red / olive. Yes in that order
4. Can I use normal varnish as I can steal from my misses or should I stick to the Fly stuff? Steal it

The E-Bay tool kit will do to start off.
If you must buy the materials kit, go with Grommit.
The vice is basic but it will work well enough.

Brilliant, thanks for your reply.

I will keep an eye out and pick something up at the weekend I think. I was thinking I should stick with cheap equipment until I am sure ill make flies, then if need be I can buy better equipment.

cheers again
