Re: saltwater fly tying--help please!!
My advice would be to keep it simple.
Check out the location and see what the locals recommend.
For bones, tie three or four patterns in different weights, you need to be able to get the fly to the fish in all states of the tide. We fished Exhuma on a big spring tide and didn't have any flies heavy enough so had to tie them on site.
Colour is important, usually you will be fishing over grass, coral or sand and need a different colour for each area , In my experience though, most resorts have just one main colour eg Exhuma in the bahamas is all sand flats, whereas Islamorada is more grass flats, if you find out what the bottom is (eg sandy) you can save your self time and money by jusy tying a couple of extra flies to cover the odd grass coral patch
For Tarpon I'd just tie two or three flies in bright colours and two or three in natural colours and a couple of Toads or similar modern patterns, The reality of Tarpon fishing is that you dont loose many flies, lots of fish but not many flies. The top Tarpon anglers (and guides) carry a leader box with perhaps 12 patterns already rigged.
So there is no need to go overboard (as I always do)
Cheers
