There was a good thread last year

Dyeing materials advice

Basically, a few Jacquard acid dyes and you can mix your own colours - just search for these online if you don't have a local art shop

I spent a few happy hours doing this

+1 for what dwillis said.
There is a bit of information on this site if you search. I have dyes from several companies and I think Jacquard is the most consistent dyes available.

Veniards' dyes are good enough for most tasks, except Black.
I use Jaquards for pinks and pastel reds as Veniards pale shades in red are difficult to obtain consistently.

The best advice I can give is keep records of everything you do and have a standard set up every time.

Cheers
