Default Heron legged hopper

Thought I'd have a go at something a bit different from winged wets for a change so tied this hopper that I concocted from rather a bizarre arrangement of materials. A forum member very kindly sent me some topnotch oval tinsel so thought I'd put it to good use....and its very good indded doesnt' come apart like the rather inferior stuff I use. Not a hopper in the true sense of the pattern I'm sure and the legs would perhaps look better below the shank but it's just what came out after looking at a heron feather I found along the riverbank wondering what I could do with it, and I thought bodies or legs and legs it was, but I'm not sure under what scenario I'd use it.

Thanks for looking and all comments welcome

cheers

Nice tying Mark, I would have saved the heron fibers for Kite's Imperials.

Thanks paddy, the make of the oval is Lagartun and it has a lovely gold colour to it that seems to reflect the light really well, I'm useing small/extra strong here.

Just a note to anyone thinking of hunting down some Lagartun.... Their 'Small' is what most folk would call medium, and use on size 10's and 8's. Their 'Fine' is what most folk would call small, and use on size 12 and 14's.

Nice fly by the way, Mark. Plenty to pick at.... but I think I'll have a day off

Your posts are unmissable.

Bit of a snatcher, bit of a hopper, perhaps a Snopper?

I would imagine the barbules on the heron barbs would trap a lot of air and make a lot of movement twitched through a wave, perhaps the air will hold the fly high up under the surface?

Thanks Rob and thanks for pointing that out, pick away, I'm no expert on hoppers as I think I've only ever tied one before so I have to learn the right form, no warra mean like

Mark you have a very nice fly there, very natural look about it
Lucky your flies so far away

Scratch, thanks for that! I want to replace my current brand and no one carries oval around here, have to order it sight unseen.
I do love the Lagartun fine & extra fine wires
