Default Tear drop buzzers

I've been trying to tie teardrop buzzers using Sally Hansen. I saw it done using varnish in a magazine but when I try it, the varnish invariably dries up and disappears, however many blobs I put on. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

a) leave the top off you SH HAN's overnight to let it thicken some.

b) I have heard of some peeps putting as many as 10 coats on buzzers and shrimp shellbacks to get the look they want.

c) Treat yourself to some Fritz UV cure gear and a UV torch. Will set you back about £15ish if you look around. Is it worth it ???? Deffo ...... fantastic gear.

d) Muck about with epoxy ....... from past expeience of my own with buzzers and epoxy ........ it's OK to have a life too. Very time consuming.

Have fun

Thanks.

Tying pike flies cured me of epoxy.
I had considered bug bond but it is pricey and I've heard mixed reports. I'll look into the UV cure.

Thumbs up Re: Tear drop buzzers

Hi Bill, i use Sally H for my t,drop buzzers. If you put on a coating gently blow on it, this will create a thin skin, then add another blob this will start to create the drop. If you do 5-6 at a time this will let you work on a rotational basis. You could also use super glue, to create the bubble. I've ordered some uv resin. I'll let you know how i get on with it. Have you used the flies again, that i sent you?

Hi Colin - right, I'll give that a try. Sounds sensible.

I tried the buzzers last time out but the fish weren't interested - something small and black just under the surface. Didn't get any interest in dries or emergers that day.

Bill you can use your dubbing needle if you dip it in the Sally H,then apply as you take it away this will also create the drop.

Bill, it's nowt to do with putting 10 coats on, blowing to create a skin, or leaving the top off overnight....

It all depends on what your base is; thread? Herl? Spanflex? Bare hook? etc etc Absorbent base layers will take usually one, maybe two coats to seal it before further coats start to build and create a progressively thicker, smooth coat. 10 coats of any nail varnish worth it's salt will give you a buzzer a thick as a babies arm. Three or four is more often than not ample, maybe five, or six if you really like things on the chunky side.
Sure, varnish from a brand new bottle will be a little thinner than from a half empty one, but it should only make a difference of a coat or two at the most.

As mentioned, collect your 'teardrop' from the brush with a dubbing needle, then apply to the thorax area. Leave it overnight. DON'T blow on it, don't watch it, leave it.

when i was making a thorax up with sallys i tilt my hook slightly downwards so the varnish runs down and then builds up a nice thorax.ps not sure if this is what u mean by tear drop buzzer but i hope this tip helps anyone building up underneath the head of the buzzer just make sure u dont tilt the hook too much that it covers the eye from underneath.

Thank you guys. I've obviously not been patient enough.
Scratch, my apologies. I've only just read this thread. Last night I was too busy showing off on another thread after a successful (for me) days fishing. After which I fell asleep on the sofa.
