I keep seeing the phrase jungle cock splits when refering to cheeks on nymphs.I have been tying in a small jungle cock feather on each side for cheeks,am I doing something wrong?

If you examine many j.c. capes you'll find that a lot of the eye feathers are actually split, often down the middle. So on many trout flies, you can use 1 feather for both sides of the fly.

On larger sea-trout & salmon flies, split feathers are often repaired by applying a drop of clear varnish of similar on the back of the eye so that it holds the split together.

I have heard that it was devised by a canny Scotsman
If repairing splits I find that a light smearing of bugbond (I cant comment on the others as I haven't tried them) works well and keeps them flexible rather than making them too stiff which can happen when using varnish.
