I've been hunting around for proper cobblers wax for, oh, about a year now. Plenty places will sell you very black cobblers wax that will turn everything it touches black. The original stuff was a very dark brown colour. The recommended solution is to make your own, apparently. Not having the patience or skill for that, I use Veniard Prepared Tiers Wax.

As said the usual cobblers wax sold today is a messy useless lump of ****.
Just use the veniards stuff.

Bill Bailey's cobbler's wax from the US is about as good as it comes. You get quite small pieces of about an inch in length and it is quite sticky so very good if you're dubbing with difficult materials, a little goes a very long way.

Proper cobblers wax, had mine for years, though purchased some new last year but as yet not used it.
Also have RUMPF Extra Tacky Wax, LOON High Tack Swax and LOON Low Tack Swax. Then I have Turrel liquid wax, again I've had this a long time.
Unfortunately, my original lump of bees wax bwcame brittle and disintigrated to bits.

This might be of use:

North Country Angler: Bill Bailey's tying wax.

I've been using the stuff for spiders a couple of years now and find it excellent.
