Default my first fly

hi all, I got a fly tying kit today and have my first two flies tied and I am well chuffed. tied two pheasant tail nymphs one with a gold head and dark red thorax. it looks really buggy. does anyone have any other ideas of simple flies I can fish on my local river. this whip finish tool is confusing me but I can half-hitch no problem. is there any major advantage to using the tool.

cheers

gerry

Try a GRHE (Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear) with and without a beadhead. Gold and Copper are good colours for the bead. Size 14 on a straight or curved hook. Deadly!

Lots of You tube vids on using a whip finish tool. Here's one with a hand finish for comparison.
