Default Veniard Premium Fly Tying Kit

Hi

After 1 year of fly fishing, I have decided to make my own flies, basically because of economical reasons. I saw this fly fishing kit, that contains no Vice. Has anyone tried it? Please share your information.

Veniard Premium Fly Tying Kit

Thanks
Mohsen

Kits are very general in their contents.
This one has a bit of a bias for stillwater patterns.
Where do you intend to fish?
You would be better making up a list of the flies you intend to fish and I dont mind giving you a breakdown on the materials you will require.
That way you will only buy what you need.

Sound advice. With a kit, you can end up with a lot of materials you will never use.

I am not familiar with that kit but in general, I agree with the suggestions to just purchase the materials you need.

I will add that you should have an experienced tyer examine some of the materials before you purchase, if this is possible. Here in the USA, I never buy biological materials such as hackle, feathers, peacock herl, deer or elk hair unless I personally examine them. Quality and sizing varies. So get an expert to buy these if you can.

There are manufactured materials such as hooks, thread, tinsel, commercial dubbing, and other synthetics that can be purchased on line.

I got that when I started out recently.

Complete waste of time and money. Masses of stuff you don't need and very poor quality tools.

Work out a list of 10 or so flies you want to tie, then get a friendly supplier to put together a package with what you need. There are lots on here who will sort you out.

I'd just start with hooks, hears ear dubbing, pheasant tail, copper and lead wire, black thread.

I'd take up Maharg's offer, if I were you

You mention economic reasons. Yes, you can save money by tying your own, but buying fly tying materials can be just as addictive as buying fishing tackle.

Am a fan of starter kits for newbes because most of the kits give you the basics. Prefer those that have been thought out with a list of patterns that can be made with the materials provided but veru mindful if the bug gets you that all will be replaced over time.

I actually got this kit just over a year or so ago and found it to be worth the money, it gives a good selection of different materials etc... some you may never use and some you will be restocking in no time at all. I would however recommend a better pair of scissors than the ones provided and also reasonable vice (the kit does not come with a vice). Other than that I have been pretty happy with it.

Hi

Thank you everybody for comments, especially from Maharg for his generous offer. Actually I realized the best way is to go to the local shop, and ask the guy for the material I would need. He is a fly fisherman as well, and even organizes some fly tying courses. This way I will end up buying what I do need, for the best fly patterns that I can use in my region, and even can get advise on the quality of the biological materials, since he is using them as well.

Cheers
Mohsen
