Question Silk thread

Are real silk threads in 8/0 and 12/0 still used, or is everything synthetic nowadays? I've been going through my old tying box (not seen the light of day since the '80s and the same age as most of my fly-tying books) and reckon that I need to get re-supplied. Also, most of the sites I've visited don't give the gauge, just refer to 'gossamer' 'cobweb' or 'ultrafine'.

Assuming silk is readily available, where are the best outlets (I've been looking at the 'Troutcatchers' website).

Also forged hooks (the old Partridge codes of L2A, L3A, H1A etc no longer appear to be valid)?

Sorry for asking beginners questions.

Phideaux,

The only genuine silk commercially available for general tying is Pearsall's Gossamer - which is rated at 6/0.

All the finer threads are either nylon or polyester.

You will find the full range of traditional and modern shades here:

Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

There are other silks available but these are much thicker - used for traditional salmon patterns.

The "old" models of Partridge hooks - L2A, L3A have been superceded by new names - the L2A is now TWH; the L3A is now TDH from Partridge.

Kind regards

Thanks for the replies folks, most helpful.

I'm also wanting to tie both traditional and Greenhalgh patterns (not so much his patterns, but his recommendations) on barbless hooks. Using the 'search' facility for previous posts I've come across the Knapek brand - does anyone recommend them?

I think you will find the Partridge SLD range great hooks. Try North Country Spiders and North Country Fishing Flies, Fly Tying Materials and Fly Fishing Tackle. northcountryflies.com.
