Hi paddy5 so you would say that it's good buy as a starter vice, I'd also looked at the various regent type vices but this one looks a lot less heavy and more versatile.

personally i would recommend this as the one you have looked at looks like a copy of a well known brand which is probably of inferior quality

ROTATABLE REGENT FLY TYING VICE, BRAND NEW, FREE P & P | eBay

while on the subject is someone extracting urine selling this as a fly tying vice

I bought one of these for my apprentice a week or two ago. When I read your post thought I'd better tie something with it before commenting.

Yeah, it's ok. Holds the hook tightly which for me is number one on the list. It rotates ok if a bit stiff-probably losen with time. Personally I'd like the stem to be a bit longer but hey-ho. Think I would use some grips to tighten the C clamp properly, not solid enough by hand.

For 15 quid it is fine. I had a Regent for my first 12 months and am a fan. This is smaller and neater otherwise about the same quality. For a first vice at that money you can't go wrong. Hth.

Chris.

Noel , even if this is a copy it's really useful and light vice for £15 and i've had good service Newmills.

'As the one you have looked at looks like a copy of a well known brand which is probably of inferior quality'

EF, are you talking about Veniards No.1 Rotary Vice??? i use one and this looks indentical except the arm on the Veniards pivots and it was twice this price, or do i have a far more expensive copy

'Personally I'd like the stem to be a bit longer'

Chris, you might want to get a free standing pedestal for your apprentice as well. I couldn't work with this in the G-clamp it's was so low. YGA do a very weighty 'Vice Base' (just weighed it...2lb 4oz or 1030g) for £14.99. Now i can tie anywhere
