Default Fly tying newbie - advice please.

Hi guys, I have ordered a fly tying kit that is currently in the post somewhere. I plan to start having a go next week.

I am looking for advice on what sort of things I should look to have a go at first, obviously the simpler things. I reckon blobs wouldn't be too tough!

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ally

Hi Ally,
It might be easier to start with a list of the flies that you know you will use and the type of fishing you will do (river or loch) and where will you be fishing.
That said a few easy and useful flies would include the wooly bu66er, pheasant tail nymph, gold ribbed hairs ear and klinkhammer in various sizes and colours. The local experts will be along to be of more help.

If your going to be fishing stillwaters then a simple goldhead would be an easy start! black tail, green body, white tail, green body, orange tail, orange body or all black, ian

Hi a black and peacock spider is a good place to start ,three different techniques/materials and a fly that will catch on any day of the season on any trout fishery in these islands.

All good advice above.

You could start with North Country Spiders. They only use 2 materials (plus varnish for the head) and 2 simple techniques. However they are not necessarily easy to get right. When you can tie a spider that looks "right", you've learned something about proportions and working carefully.

heres a video

Guys, many thanks for all your advice! Should be a good start for me. Pete I saw info on the fly tyers guild so might pop along to that. Might also take you up on your advice on showing me the basics, will let you know!
